Our Mission & History

One Last Goal was founded on July 2, 2019, the day after we lost Matthew William Benedict—our beloved son, brother, friend, and teammate—to suicide. Established through the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, this nonprofit honors Matthew’s life and his courageous efforts to support others facing mental health challenges.

Matthew openly shared his struggles and was deeply committed to helping others, especially young people navigating the effects of concussions, head trauma, and emotional pain. He worked to raise awareness, break stigma, and support those who felt unseen.

Inspired by his legacy, One Last Goal advances education, research, and meaningful support focused on the connection between mental health and sports. Our mission is to protect and uplift others through understanding, early intervention, and compassionate action that promotes mental well-being.

IIn Matthew’s memory, we are committed to building a future where no one feels alone in their struggle. Together, we strive to honor Matthew and carry forward his legacy of generosity, goodwill, and compassion—for the rest of our lives and beyond. Thank you for being part of this journey with us.

“No more hiding. No more silence. Speak up… tell everyone you love them every single day and treat those you don’t know with the same love. Start the conversation now… life is precious. And listen… don’t just hear, but listen to those you love and everyone around you… make sure they know they matter.”

— Matthew Benedict, 2015
